PROBLEM
You’re slow to react when returning first serves. It could be because you’re not moving quickly enough once the ball leaves your opponent’s racquet, or you’re taking too big a swing. The result is late contact and a shaky return, putting you at a disadvantage right from the start.

SOLUTION
The key to speeding up your racquet on the return is to combine your shoulder turn and racquet take-back into one movement. To practice, get in your ready position and have a partner hit serves toward your forehand but deliberately into the net. Because you know where the serve is heading, you can jump-start your motion and have your racquet back and ready before the ball even hits the net. Then just shadow your swing. Next, have your partner hit serves in the net to either your forehand or backhand side. Continue to practice getting your racquet back before the ball hits the net, and then shadow your swing. Finally, have your partner serve over the net to either side. You’ll be amazed how quickly you react to both forehand and backhand returns.

Age Old Question

Does winning mean everything?  Does a coach have to be better than his/her student?  This question is like an open ended question on an exam that one would see in high school and it may baffle people until the end of the time.  I know it is a concern for coaches and players because I am both and it is a concern for myself.  I would like to never lose to any of my students and do play them often and almost never lose to any of them, but there are times where I am thrown off.

Does Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, and Andy Murray need coaches?  Let's take a look...Nadal has his uncle who was a great junior in his country but that was as far as he got.  If you want my professional opinion Nadal would be washing cars if it were not for Uncle Toni.  Federer does not even have a coach but he uses a team of people to train with to keep him competitive.  This has been an evolving approach and does not seem to be working in his case too well.  Andy Roddick a pro with many coaches and many hats and has Larry Stefanki in his corner these days.  Larry did not have a great tennis career but it was nothing to be ashamed of reaching the top 50 in the late seventies and winning one ATP tournament.  Still I am sure there are many more accomplished tennis pros out there who are coaching at the club level that have better credentials than Larry.  On top of that so far Larry and Uncle Toni would both get bageled by their students regularly.  Finally, Andy Murray who parted ways with Gilbert and is now on the Federer recipe of having a team rather than one coach.  This appears to have been a successful decision in the short run for him, cutting Gilbert loose has hurt Gilbert as a coach and helped Murray as a player.  There is also no chance Brad could beat Murray, except with a frying pan off court.

Is it possible for a player to turn coach when he has great coaching skills but not the sharpest of playing skills?  How does one judge great coaching skills?  Can we judge through people like Nick B. who can bring people into the limelight or is by some of the other coaches who trained those players and then handed them off to Nick B. so they could get more exposure.   Some of the people in the positions of hiring in the tennis industry typically have incoming candidates compete against their top students.  This is a good ice breaker for the group as a whole but could be embarrassing for an incoming coach.  In many cases the candidate will win a match or tie break and still not get the job and in some cases they will not win so is that still deserving of the opportunity?  It is clear that tennis is maybe more of a  journey than defined rules.  Tennis is not the marines where there is black and white and for some people that is what they need.  Does tennis need a marine?

It is true that if coaches were still good enough then they would not be coaching, they would be playing.  The truth is tennis is not immune to the hustle.  Although it may be a gentleman's sport people hustle and people get hustled and that is just the nature of life.  I have been on both ends, and like to believe I have been on the sucker side way fewer than most but it is always embarrassing to feel that sucker side feeling and it always feels the same.  To get through it you just have to stick your pride in your back pocket.

Reality Check

I must admit I think that people in general are not intelligent.  The people at SUNTRUST bank might be the dumbest people I have ever met.  When dealing with the Gainesville branch they are perfect.  Outside of that I have met some truly stupid people that don't see things through.  I continuiously have to do their job for them and it does not make me money doing that.  I am beginning to question whether the internet is really all cracked up to what it is and considering dropping all negotiable instruments beside cash to make a statement.  Seriously the stupider I come off the better off I am with this bank.  I should switch to Bank of America.

Craig Hickman on tennis .blogspot.com has gone krazy talking about politics and writing weird stuff!  Dude, who cares what other people think about you!  Its none of your business what other people think about you!!!  It only matters what you think about yourself!  I freakin almost joined the marines today.  I catch a lot of crap for nearly everything I do, and if it were easy than everyone would do it.  You gotta roll with the punches, and sometimes it is a thankless job but suck it up and have some passion!

Inner Tennis: Playing the Game

Great interview on www.tennis.com with Pete Carroll go there to read the rest of it.

How did you become a disciple of Tim Gallwey’s “The Inner Game of Tennis”?

In graduate school, I was doing sports psychology stuff and the book came across the reading list way back when, and then I had the chance to visit with [Gallwey]. He gave a seminar, then a group from my class had dinner with him, and I was instantly attracted to the perspective, to the point of view that he brought. And I started to incorporate it into my own hoops game—playing basketball, and I was also playing tennis at the time. I was done playing football then. And I just thought there was really something there. It resonated, and I’ve stayed with the information ever since, and it has become part of my life, the philosophy and the background of what he spoke about 30 or 40 years ago.

TITLE IX COACH

BJ King
: It is important we recognize—and remember—that the Title IX amendments apply to all educational opportunities and not just athletics. The athletic implications of Title IX get us closer to gender equity in collegiate sports, but there is still work to be done. I think some colleges and universities have hidden behind the Title IX curtain to cut programs for both men and women when really it is a budget decision. Today, we are closer with women getting 45 percent of the college athletic scholarship dollars. But that remaining 5 percent represents almost $150 million in scholarship dollars; we need to close the gap.

For all the University of Tampa students...Since there has been a lot of comments...There is no men's team, so there is no way that I could have played on the men's team while I was there.  Yes, I was president of my Fraternity instead.  I probably would have played on the men's team if there was one.  In regards to the spelling and the grammar this is a blog.  I am not sure if the word BLOG is in the dictionary but basically grammar and spelling rules go out the window.  Also my editor is on vacation in Tierra Del Fuego.  Do you think a University of Tampa student even knows where that is or the significance of it?

Tennis star Andy Roddick proposed to his model girlfriend, Brooklyn Decker, almost exactly a year ago.
The two have been dating since the end of 2007.
Wedding singer was the legendary Mister Elton John!
Turns out Roddick and Elton are charity buddies.
About two years ago, Elton performed at the Andy Roddick Foundation's Charity Gala and then last year Roddick helped raise $400,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

TAMPA SPARTANS

new article came out about the team today backing the tennis coach which is insane.

this is the coaches records below over the past 10 years.  only one winning season in ten tries.  i feel like this is worse than bad luck.  if i were to place ten bets i am pretty sure that i would win at least two of the ten.  i was in a fraternity for four years and president for two and we worked hard enough to win frat of the year in that time.  al dufus only won one out of ten. that is just really really bad luck.  i am not going to say he is a bad coach, but he just cant seem to have winning seasons.  maybe he cant motivate the girls.  maybe he is just not a good college coach and a good HS coach.  maybe they don't pay him enough money to push the girls hard enough.  either way, if anyone has this many losing seasons he needs to be replaced or resign, seriously.  ive tried to contact vaughn and set up meetings and it has been a pain in the ass but will drive to meet vaughn if willingness arises on his part which is doubtful.  if i were coaching a kid who had a record of 1-9 i would suggest this kid to find a new coach with all due respect and admit that the situation was not working out and be a man and own up to it.  i think that most would agree.  take a look at the numbers.  results dont lie.  i hope that this momentum does not go this far for nothing, for all the UT readers and supporters get on your horse and let your voice be heard no matter how loud it is. like i said before, i am willing to work for no cost, just cover my gas expenses for my car and put the rest of the coaches salary toward the girls and scholarship money.  now what?

University of Tampa Tennis

PART TWO THE FOLLOW UP - A HOT MESS

I did not expect to put my money where my mouth is but I was recently published in the minaret which is the paper for the University of Tampa.   Not much to brag about since it is a school rag and a lot of garbage gets published in it that is ridiculis.  I have been published in other quality mags so it is not a huge deal to me but it has caused some uproar.  If you noticed that only half of the picture is in there, which means some of the girls are going to get cut out along with the coach if I become the new coach.  I did not plan on taking the stage this way but I am happy that it was published because a lot of times things will go on forever that is a problem and no one will do anything about it.  I mentioned in my previous article that I am not a fan of the AD and believe he should be fired as well because we went at it a couple of years ago when I pitched a men's tennis team to the school.  He turned it down and I gave up.  This time I plan to approach the president of the school, VAUGHN and have already appeared to have gained some support from the girls on the team.

These demands are not unreasonable!  The school should have more courts, a men's team, better coaching staff, more scholarship money, higher quality courts and so on.  For the cost it is to go to UT there should be plenty of money in the bank to fund this they just need a swift kick in the ass in that direction.  The school has grown tremendously since I left with new buildings everywhere and doubling in size in their population.  This means more $$ to fund programs like tennis.  Tennis will be a FLORIDA TRADITION for as long as we are alive and will be a TAMPA TRADITION as well because this state is the best spot for tennis in the world and tampa is in the heart of that with Saddlebrook, IMG, and TENNIS LIFE MAG all within a few mile radius.

PETE BODO

Seriously, Pete I have been reading your blog and your stories for a long time now. I have always enjoyed your perspective. For those of you who don't know Pete is connected to the top of tennis. Pete is THE big dog at TENNIS MAGAZINE and TENNIS MAGAZINE is the big dog of tennis magazines. He is probably the most powerful writer in tennis so this may come as a cheap shot to him. I have spoken to Pete many times and he has been a minor inspiration to me along my journey through life committed to tennis.   He has written books with Sampras, McEnroe among others that have sold a lot.

Here we go...Your blog on tennis.com is over. Its been enough Pete. Bring me on to spice things up because its getting beat. Especially the title you give for every entry "crisis center." It does not make sense. It is creative for one post, but not 80% of them. So, please Pete throw a curveball and change it up.

So Damn Beautiful

Brooklyn Decker and Andy Roddick
Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker became husband and wife at his Austin, Texas, home, a guest at the wedding told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Elton John sang for the bride and groom at a reception held at a country club after the ceremony Friday night, the guest said, speaking on condition of anonymity because it was a private function not open to the media.

People.com first reported about the wedding.

The 26-year-old Roddick announced his engagement to the 22-year-old model in March 2008.

Among those attending the wedding were tennis great Billie Jean King, Roddick's Davis Cup teammates James Blake and Mardy Fish and U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe.

Roddick finished 2003 ranked No. 1. He is currently No. 6.

Federer, who owns 13 Grand Slam singles titles, married longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec last weekend in a small ceremony in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland.

John Frates
Talk about some of the most horrible clubs being run in the game.  The previous post I was describing the new director of tennis John Frates.  This guy is not even certified, and even if he was he does not maintain his membership.  This guy allegedly has 20 years in the business, helping himself, not others.  This guys has some crooked ass teeth too, not pretty.  I also understand why now his kids never played tennis and played all other sports except tennis.  Respected fathers usually have children who try to follow in their footsteps.  I went out of my way to set up an interview.  I always wanted to work at a YACHT club.  I wondered what it was and thought this was my chance to work at a high end club put my business that is in the crapper on hold, make some more money coaching at this club and invest that money back into my business.  After wasting an hour conversation on the phone with this puts I drive another hour to interview.  I kill the interview.  I am told to call back at a certain time for the results of the interview, under the impression I would get a start date.  No answer.  Three messages later, no call back.  I am half the man I used to be.  The economy sucks and my odds hitting the lottery are not so good.  Take time with a wounded hand is what they say...It likes to heal.  Well I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

University of Tampa

This has got to be the worst tennis school in the history of Florida tennis.  This is my alma matter and I am embarrassed to even be affiliated with this University.  The girl's team is awful, I mean absolutely tragic.  In 10 years DuFaux the current coach has one winning season.  I mean, ummm basically that means you should be FIRED!  Give me a break! Get someone in there who has a clue.

There is also no men's tennis team because the athletic director has no balls.  The AD does not have the balls to put together a men's tennis team and pitch that to whomever manages new teams.

The school also only has six tennis courts and they are not even updated on paint colors.  I am sorry, but please for the love of god, fire the women's coach, get a men's team, add at least four more courts, paint the courts the proper colors and give the coaches a reasonable salary.

A school like University of Tampa should have a high quality tennis team, like Rollins.  This is a disgrace and please contact Ronald Vaughn and ask him to reach into the deep pockets of UT.edu to bring in some skills on the tennis front.  They throw up new buildings left and right and the school costs a fortune, I should know I spent four years there.

The truth is I asked the school to link my site onto theirs.  Not like it would drive any traffic but only because it was my undergrad.  Well the sports guy said yes and then did not do it which means he has no integrity.  He should have said no to save his ass.  Then I get a call back saying the coach wants kickbacks.  Silly bastards, this is why our economy is in the dumpster.

Keep your eye on Lauren Holt though, this girl crushed us in High School tennis when I was coaching winning seasons then.  Now she can't manage to win a match, I blame the coaching with no doubt!

On a serious note, if you fire this guy I will coach the girl's team free of charge and guarantee a winning season, and will raise enough money to bring in new courts and new colors.  This offer is on the table kids...

Should have waited until just a few days before the French Open, then you probably would have won it. Look at Roddick, winning a tournament and beating you for the first time after he got engaged. Fish getting deep in the US Open just before his wedding. Rog, you should have waited! I mean, she's definitely not ugly but you could have just flipped through a mag like AROD and just picked out a swimsuit model. I guess loyalty turns you on though. Good Luck Kid!
