Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro dominated former U.S. Open Champion and number one seed Andy Roddick in the final at Los Angeles 6-1, 7-6 played in UCLA. Del Potro has won his last three tournaments and 14 matches in a row. He is a young, lanky and awkward looking with long stringy arms at 6 foot 7. The guy's arms are so long that it is like he does not have to move much to cover the whole court. If you have ever watched Sharapova play LIVE they are similar because they both look too tall for tennis and move very awkwardly on court. Roddick couldn't hold serve in the first set and Del Potro was not phased at all by his monster service speeds. Roddick held his own in the second set until he got smoked in the tie-break. He was complaining at 4-1 in the first set about back pain which was probably more of a mental thing then a real thing. Allegedly Roddick beat Del Potro in a friendly set a day earlier 7-5. This is officially the second time I have seen Del Potro and the first time he was just god awful. This time he was not terrible but not great. Roddick looked like he took amphetamines before the match because he was twitching and looked so ancy in the first set it looked kind of scary and he eventually snapped by cracking his racquet which is always very cool in my book.

Roddick passed on the Olympics to prepare for the Open and I will be rooting for him. He reminds me of just another dude who is really good at tennis. Fish also had a decent run after being in the dumps in singles (winning in doubles though). I was hoping for a Fish Roddick final (all american) but this Argentinian kid (who should be playing soccer) was unstoppable and is continuing to climb the ranks.
